Frequently Asked Questions
What is "American-style" gemcutting?
For centuries, the intricate art of gem cutting was a closely guarded secret, typically passed down through apprenticeships. However, approximately a century ago, a revolutionary approach emerged in America, simplifying the process. This new method utilizes diagrams and a sequence of interconnected cuts and facets (meetpoints), making it possible for anyone to learn gemcutting with the right equipment and dedication.
Why do you only have classes on consecutive days?
The curriculum uses a building-block approach. To ensure knowledge retention of these fundamentals, the course requires several consecutive 8-hour days of intensive study.
What is the basic structure each of a day of class?
Each day begins at 9 am with a 30-minute lecture or discussion on both the theory and practice of gem faceting. Following this, participants will work until a 45-minute lunch break. The afternoon session will mirror the morning, incorporating breaks for conversation, addressing practical matters including recommendations, and advising on budget allocation for gem rough and equipment.
Can I bring a guest with me?
Sure! Your guest is welcome to relax at the house and on the property during class hours, as you will need to focus and won't have much time to talk. However, the surrounding area is beautiful for them to explore, and you will have lunches and evenings together. If your guest is interested in joining a gemcutting class, we can discuss a group discount.
