Frequently Asked Questions
What is "American-style" gemcutting?
For centuries, the intricate art of gem cutting remained a closely guarded secret; apprenticeships typically passed it down. However, approximately a century ago, America saw a revolutionary approach emerge that simplified the process. This new method utilizes diagrams and a sequence of interconnected cuts and facets (meetpoints). It makes learning gemcutting possible for anyone with the right equipment and dedication.
Why do you only have classes on consecutive days?
We use a building-block approach for the curriculum. To ensure knowledge retention of these fundamentals, the course involves all-day immersive hands-on learning.
What is the basic structure each of a day of class?
Each day begins at 9 am with a 30-minute lecture or discussion covering both the theory and practice of gem faceting. Following this, participants work until a 45-minute lunch break. The afternoon session mirrors the morning. It incorporates breaks for conversation, addresses practical matters including recommendations, and advises on budget allocation for gem rough and equipment. We provide flexibility on pacing to meet each student’s needs.
Can I bring a guest with me?
Sure! Your guest may relax at the house and on the property during class hours, as you will need to focus and won't have much time to talk. However, the surrounding area offers beautiful exploration for them, and you will share lunches and evenings together. If your guest shows interest in joining a gemcutting class, we can discuss a group discount.
Where do I stay during classes?
We recommend a few nice places to stay within a 15-minute drive, or you can search Airbnb (feel free to send us listings so we can check if they’re nearby).
