The Oak and Stone Experience

The Oak & Stone School of American Gemcutting offers a distinctive and enriching experience for gemcutters of all levels. Whether you're curious about exploring faceting as a new hobby or are a seasoned gemcutter seeking to master advanced techniques or new equipment, Oak & Stone is here to guide your journey.

Background

The Oak & Stone School of American Gemcutting is the realization of a vision by partners Michael Holmes and Kim Nguyen, who share a deep passion for community-building and the preservation of traditional crafts.

Having each cut their first gemstones over a decade ago, Michael continued his journey into faceting, seeking relatable ways to hone his skills. Immersed in the field, he actively trained and eventually taught alongside renowned gemcutters, collaborated with jewelers globally, and contributed to a number of instructional books on faceting. Now established as an invaluable voice and familiar friend to the gemcutting community, Michael is passionate about giving back and sharing his knowledge and experiences.

Michael and Kim established the Oak & Stone School in 2025 with a commitment to offer personalized and supportive gemcutting education. With an equipment partnership with Facetron, students will have an empowering experience mastering this intricate art, creating tangible beauty while fostering a lifelong appreciation for the craft. Join us at Oak & Stone and embark on your own rewarding journey into the world of gemcutting.

The Location

Situated in the peaceful woods in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, Oak & Stone School resides in a traditional home based on a 1905 design by Gustav Stickley, a leading voice of the American Art & Crafts movement. As trained artists, Michael and Kim have cherished this location as a haven for their own creativity, as well as a place of rest and connection for friends and loved ones. Oak & Stone aims to share this environment, where fellow artists can learn and grow.

The Oak and Stone Learning Experience

While inspired by community-building, Oak & Stone offers intimate classes, typically with just one or two students per teacher and a dedicated teaching assistant, ensuring personalized attention. Our offerings range from focused weekend workshops to immersive five-day intensives, complete with amenities.

In 2026, Oak & Stone will enhance the experience by opening guest rooms, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in a creative retreat.
